Wisdom Teeth – What You Need To Know.

What Does ‘Impacted Wisdom Teeth’ Mean?

Wisdom Teeth Removal - Kensington Court Clinic - impacted wisdom teeth
The last set of teeth to grow in the human mouth are the wisdom teeth, located at the back of the gums. However, approximately one-third of people never develop wisdom teeth, and some individuals may only have a few rather than the usual four. Wisdom teeth generally emerge during the late teenage years or early twenties, when all other teeth have already taken their place in the mouth. Unfortunately, there may not be enough space left for these teeth to grow correctly, leading to them being crowded and potentially impacted – growing at an angle or partially.

When Should I Visit The Dentist About My Wisdom Teeth?

If you are experiencing severe pain from your wisdom teeth, seek the advice of Kensington Court Clinic. Our experts will conduct a thorough evaluation of your teeth and recommend extraction, if necessary, after a detailed X-ray examination. It is imperative that you book an appointment with us without delay, rather than waiting for your regular check-up. Kensington Court Clinic is a self-governing dental hospital with the capability of performing surgical tooth extraction using a general anaesthetic in our specialised theatre rooms.

How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

At the Kensington Court Clinic, our skilled surgeons expertly extract routine, difficult, or impacted wisdom teeth utilising the appropriate method of either local or general anaesthesia. Whilst upper wisdom tooth removal is typically a simple procedure, lower wisdom tooth extraction can pose greater complexity and require additional time due to being deeply embedded in the bone. As a result, patients may experience mouth swelling and restricted jaw movement for several days following the surgery.

Why Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom Teeth Removal - Kensington Court Clinic -why are wisdom teeth removed
Whilst impacted wisdom teeth may not pose immediate problems, it is important to be mindful of potential dental issues that can arise. If the wisdom teeth have not fully emerged or are impacted, there is a risk of bacterial build-up and plaque accumulation which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, abscess, or bacterial infection. These problems can often be treated with antibiotics and antiseptic mouthwash. However, in cases where these treatments prove ineffective, it may be necessary to consider removal of the teeth. Whilst there is no proven benefit to removing non-problematic impacted wisdom teeth, it is important to weigh the potential risks and complications associated with such a procedure.

Will My Wisdom Teeth Removal Be Painful?

Wisdom Teeth Removal - Kensington Court Clinic - pain free wisdom teeth removal - sleep dentistry
At our dental practice, we prioritise providing a calming experience for our patients. However, for those who require additional support, we offer general anaesthetic dentistry for any dental procedure that is deemed appropriate.

If preferred, a general anaesthetic can be administered to allow you to sleep throughout the procedure, resulting in complete unawareness of the treatment.

It is important to note that prior to choosing this treatment option, a discussion with our team and completion of a medical questionnaire is necessary to ensure your suitability for the procedure.
