An Overview Of The Implant Process.
The dental implant process is a simple and usually painless procedure that is typically done under local anaesthetic. However, if you are feeling anxious, your dentist may provide sedation to calm your nerves.
After your mouth has become numb, your dentist will cut into your gum and create a small opening in the jawbone. The implant is then positioned in the hole, and your gum is usually sutured. In some cases, you can receive new teeth the same day, referred to as smile in a day treatment. Generally, the bone and gums need some time to recover before the abutment is connected, meaning you may have an observable gap while the implant heals or your dentist can provide temporary teeth until you are ready.
Dental Implant Tooth Replacement Types.
The main process for all dental implants generally includes the removal of any damaged teeth, preparation of the jawbone with grafting when needed, implant placement, bone growth and healing, abutment placement, artificial tooth placement and follow-up visits.
The five different types of dental implants are Endosteal Implants, Subperiosteal Implants, All-on-4 Dental Implants, Implant Overdentures, and Implant Supported Bridges.
Endosteal Implants
Endosteal Implants are typically placed in the bone and are the most popular option. Screws, cylinders, or blades are used to hold the replacement teeth for those with bridges or removable dentures. The titanium root is placed in the jawbone which holds the replacement tooth in place.
Subperiosteal Implants
Subperiosteal Implants, on the other hand, are done on the bone and are the preferred choice when there is insufficient bone to hold the implant. These are placed above the jawbone to hold the artificial tooth.
All-on-4 Dental Implants
The All-on-4 Dental Implants provide a great solution for those looking to avoid dentures. Small titanium screws are inserted into the jawbone and are followed by the attachment of a crown to provide a realistic and functional tooth. Four implants are typically used per jaw for this procedure.
Implant Overdentures
Implant Overdentures offer a better alternative to traditional dentures, and may be an option for those healthy enough for tooth extraction. These are placed over implants and provide greater stability than regular dentures. They can help improve chewing, speech, comfort, and may even work with existing dentures.
Implant Supported Bridges
Finally, Implant Supported Bridges can be used when one or more teeth are missing, or if a nerve is close by. This dental implant has three components: the implant, the abutment, and the restoration. It also reduces pressure on individual implants caused by grinding. After an initial consultation which will include x-rays, dental history, and possible CT scans, the implant is placed followed by the second surgery for the restoration phase. The permanent bridge is then attached at the last visit.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
Through a process known as osseointegration, dental implants directly bond with the jawbone, allowing them to be permanent fixtures.
When osseointegration is complete, the implant and the bone tissue have become one, thus creating a reliable foundation for the prosthetic tooth that sits atop it. Although the implant is designed to be lasting, the crown affixed to it may require replacement after 15 to 20 years due to normal wear and tear, with 50 to 80 percent of all crowns needing to be changed out at this point.
